Special Needs Parenting

A Wonderfully Made Journey

Have you ever felt called into a space or a role where you felt completely and utterly unprepared? That was me, early on in my journey as a mom to a child with special needs. It was a world that I knew very little about. I think that’s the case for a lot of parents who find themselves in this community – navigating resources, the medical community, the education system, all while juggling the daily responsibilities of work, home and raising a child.

Hi, we’re Lacey and Cooper. Post by post, I began sharing bits and pieces of our journey with autism on my personal Facebook page. It felt safe there because it was among friends and family. Around that same time, I started taking photos for families of all abilities under the name, “Wonderfully Made” – a reference to the verse in Psalms. Then an occasional comment would come up. “You should really start a blog.”

While I’ve always enjoyed writing and found it as a helpful way to share more about autism with our family and friends, something about sharing the hard parts of our story with complete strangers seemed…well…hard. Behind the happy photos, there are some really intense moments, meltdowns and downright battles for services. Moments and challenges that those unfamiliar with the special needs world can’t always process or appreciate. But there are beautiful moments too. Wonderful, really.

This is a space where my goal is to bring awareness to both – the incredibly hard moments and the equally wonderfully made journey that we’ve found ourselves on.

Thanks for reading.
